The 87th most common last name in China. There are two main origins to this last name 1) Originated from the name Ji. During Chun Qiu, the duke of Zheng had two sons, Wu Sheng and Shu Duan. Their mother, Jiang, disliked the oldest son Wu Sheng because of the birth difficulties she encountered during labor. On the other hand, Shu Duan was a good-looking man, and Jiang liked him better than his brother. Jiang tried to convince her husband to pass his dukedom to his younger son, but was unsuccessful. After Wu Sheng became duke, he made his brother in charge of the city Jing Cheng. Being persuaded by his mother, Shu Duan decided to rebel against his brother and to take over his dukedom. However Shu Duan failed and fled to Gong kingdom. His descendents began to bear the last name of Duan. 2) Descendents of Lao Zi (whose real name was Li Ran). His son Ming Zhong was a famous general in Wei kingdom during Chun Qiu, and was awarded the land of Duan Gan. During Zhan Guo, his descendents migrated west, and changed their last name from Duan Gan to Duan.
