The 72nd most common last name in China. There are the following origins. 1) The ancient king Di Ku had a wife called Jiandi, who accidentally swallowed a swallow egg, during a hunting expedition. When she gave birth to her son, Di Ku named the baby Zi Qi. (For Zi means seed, son, or egg, and Qi means eat.). After 14 generations, Zi Qi gave birth to Zhang Tang (king of the Shang Dynasty). The actual name of Zhang Tang was Zi Yi. His descendents combined the Chinese character of Zi and Yi to form the last name Kong. 2) Zhong Yan was a brother of Shang Zhou Wang, the last king of the Shang Dynasty. Zhong became the duke of Song. He had a descendent called Kong Fu, who became the prime minister of the Song kingdom. During a rebellion, Kong Fu was killed and his descendents fled to the kingdom of Lu. To commemorate Kong Fu, they changed their last name to Kong. After four generations in Lu kingdom, Kong Fuzi (Confucius) was born. (Kong means pores).
